Nonprofit Partners/Partner Profiles

ServiceCorps sends volunteers to many different nonprofits throughout the region. During the past year, the following four organizations have been popular destinations for employees.

 


City Year, Washington DC

City Year Washington, DC
City Year Washington, DC is one of sixteen City Year sites located across the country that unite individuals ages 17-24 in a demanding year of community service. In Washington, fifty-five young adults provide critically needed services to underserved children and youth. Local activities include: delivering substance abuse and HIV/AIDS prevention education, providing literacy tutoring and academic support, and implementing leadership development opportunities for middle school students.

ServiceCorps volunteers work with City Year on a variety of high-impact, hands-on service days. Past projects include painting murals and landscaping Young Elementary School, Emory Elementary School, and Banneker High School.


Food & Friends

Food & Friends
Food & Friends prepares, packages, and delivers meals and groceries to more than 1,275 people living with HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other life-challenging illnesses throughout the Washington, D.C. region.

Food & Friends is one of ServiceCorps’ most popular team volunteer destinations. In 2006, more than 50 teams volunteered together preparing meals in the kitchen at Food & Friends. Staff also participate in Food & Friends events including the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, the AIDS Ride, Dining out for Life, and Chef’s Best.



Miriam’s Kitchen

Miriam’s Kitchen
Miriam’s Kitchen provides individualized services that address the causes and consequences of homelessness. At Miriam's Kitchen, the coupling of a daily meal program with the delivery of case management services allows the organization to meet the short- and long-term needs of homeless individuals.

ServiceCorps volunteers donate time and skills to Miriam’s Kitchen. Some prepare and serve breakfast on a regular basis each month. Others have donated design time to create logos and event-specific brochures, IT support, and research projects to the organization. Several ServiceCorps staff members have also served on the Miriam’s Kitchen board.


Washington Parks & People

Washington Parks & People
Washington Parks & People works to revitalize Washington, D.C.’s extensive network of public lands and waterways. The organization began 17 years ago with the rejuvenation of Malcolm X Park. Parks & People engages local citizens in their work, creating a sense of neighborhood ownership and pride while promoting the importance of environmental sustainability.

Hundreds of ServiceCorps volunteers have worked together to make local parks safer, brighter places to meet and play. Washington Parks & People offers an exciting way to spend an afternoon—clearing walking trails walking trails, building exercise trails, and beautifying local green spaces.
