Why ServiceCorps /The Case for Corporate PhilanthropyA few years ago, most small- to medium-sized companies did not have a formal volunteer program. Now, many employees, shareholders, and community members expect well-organized and effective ways to serve. A recent study of 18-26 year olds revealed that 62% of survey respondents prefer to work for a company that presents opportunities to apply skills to benefit nonprofit organizations; only 39% of respondents actually work for a company that provides those opportunities. In addition, 65% of respondents believe companies should make an effort to match employee skills with nonprofit needs. Only 29% claim their company makes this effort. These data demonstrate a clear disconnect between what employees and potential employees want and what companies are providing to the youngest generation of the workforce. Companies that recognize and move toward this goal will be better positioned for recruitment and retention of this growing group.
